TEACH A KID TO FISH

I grew up around the water... Orange, Texas... a spot where piney woods, cypress swamps, and salt marshes converge... we had bayous, rivers, creeks, rice canals, lakes, the intracoastal canal... lots of water...

I hunted... fished... camped... I developed a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Today... living at South Padre Island, Texas I continue to pursue these activities... if you are coming to SPI... and you like to fish... let me make some suggestions...

Fishing in the South Padre Island/ Port Isabel area:

 bring your tackle... wet a hook... it's an island: we're surrounded by water...

Light tackle?... it's ok... most fishing around here is light gear... open faced spin cast... 8lb test line... it's what you need... try a shrimp... try a 3" plastic shrimptail worm... got a fly rod?... it's the latest rage around here...
 

 try more than one thing

Pier Fishing... night / day... the piers charge by the rod... beat the sun... fish under the lights
  Wade Fishing in the Bay... fish for speckled trout (spotted weakfish), redfish (red drum)
   Wade Fishing the Surf... whiting... speckled trout... redfish
   Jetties Fishing... whiting... specs... reds... sharks (not on your light gear)
   ask... go to any marina or bait shop... and ask... South Padre Island is a really really friendly place
   read the local paper... what is being caught is what you fish for... duh!

 remember.. this is saltwater... clean your gear after each use...

  Hire a guide!!!... no better way to have succesful fishing than to fish with someone that knows the local fish and techniques!!... check out the recommended guides if you want to increase your chances of going home w/fish... it's as simple as that
   Got a boat?... bring it!... go w/a guide the first day?... it's called hedging your bets... the laguna madre is tricky... average 3' depth
